PROJECTX: CONCH STREET BLENDER

ABOUT (MY) PROJECTX

We have the liberty to choose our own project this time to develop or challenge anything we want in the direction of media design. This will need a personal coach. My coach is Chris Brunne (chill guy btw) and my projectx will be using blender since i am a total beginner (or worse) at it. My motive is to grow in blender before i get into sem3 and i will do so by cretaing 3d models of "Spongebob Squarepants'" conch street. This is the street where the 3 main characters live so i will redesign their houses in blender. Of cousre if time remains I am willing to add more details or other objects.

ASSIGNED TASK

Create 3D models of the houses on Conch street (from spongebob) and provide the designated project plan; research and documentation process to validate your work.

RESEARCH & SUCH

Firstly i made a projectplan and trello for the project. Then started right away on the research and references. I looked up youtube videos on the history of spongebob and his character designs throughout the years. It went from 2D to 3D quickly. 3D usually comes in Games and movies. For the refernces i looked up the houses of conchstreet in great detail, wrote down what could be useful and even the origin of the houses for an extra touch. The pictures gathered were a mix of 2D and 3D models of the houses. This helps me see what others had experimented with earlier. I also made moodboards to match the characters with the house and get the vibes. This step wasn't really needed but i felt excited just to add to it.

TRIAL & ERROR

with not much experience i had to firstly look up the keyboard shortcuts and i started to learn how you can move around objects etc. Patricks house was not hard at all. Then i made squidwards house and started having issues at the door so I used boolean tool via generator to fix the overlapping issue i had. What was the most difficult for me was spongebobs house. This had many complicated shapes. I got stuck and asked Chris to see if there's a way that i can e.g put the pineapple leaves on top of the pineapple in a curvy form and not just spiked. He did explain some thinbgs and tried helping where he could but we both felt lost. And due to lack of time i could not attend to the problem properly. I later tried to really focus and play around with what the tools do if you tinker around. Just trying led to me making the leaves seem curved around with "rotate".

REFLECTION

To be very honest i was excited for this project since it was paired with something i am so passionate about i would never get bored of: spongebob. I did give more of my time to maintaining to the deadline of the portfolio than this project. I am willing to take this project further by really seeing how blender works. Looking back i do feel that somewhere or the other i expected way too much from myself as a beginner and therefore my projectplan sounded a bit unrealistic with the experience and timeframe. I will keep this in mind next time. I am disheartend that i couldnt finish it on time but i can defintely say that i tried and know blender a little bit better compared to 2 weeks ago.
